Colin Westgate FRPS MFIAP MPAGB APAGB Colin Westgate has been photographing in the landscape for over 60 years, having been given a basic 35mm camera for his 21st birthday. Living in the countryside in a small Sussex village at that time, he was immediately drawn to the landscape. He has never lost his passion and enthusiasm for this, and he has a deep affinity with the countryside and the beauty of nature. He finds no greater pleasure than to capture what his eye sees and his soul feels, and with his images he seeks to portray the essence of his subject, whether it be the wild landscapes of places such as Iceland, or the more gentle features of his home location in Mersea Island, Essex. The challenge of landscape photography is to convey one’s emotional response to a place into a photographic image with feeling and expression. The camera is a precision optical tool which will capably record a subject but it cannot easily capture what the photographer feels. To achieve this requires interpretation and use of various techniques to create the final image. Colin Westgate, September 2023
