Throughout my life I have been sewing and crafting and since retiring from teaching 12 years ago, my creative pursuits have become my main focus. I particularly enjoy producing textured work, creating a three dimensional appearance. I originally used a variety of fabrics, shaped and quilted into pictures, but for the past few years I have been creating pictures using material that would otherwise be discarded... polystyrene! My original inspiration came from a piece I found on Mersea beach, then supplemented by remnants of packaging we had at home. I Iove the challenge of creating a beautiful picture from such an aesthetically unappealing material. Above all, I enjoy the satisfaction of working with and then painting the material to create realistic textures which closely resemble wood or stone surfaces. Most of my more recent pictures have a coastal/ wildlife theme, but I have also worked on private commissions, which tend to have a more personalised and structural focus around clients' homes and gardens. I have also made several 3d models... of a lighthouse and rustic cottages etc. I have lived on beautiful Mersea island for almost 30 years. We used to spend part of the year in Spain, where I held regular exhibitions, but now that we no longer own a home there, I am delighted to have been accepted as a member of the Mersea Island Artists group and look forward to exhibiting and selling my work or taking commissions via their regular Open Studios events.
